Carpenters' Hall is owned by the Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia. The land was bought in 1768. The company decided to build on January 30, 1770, and construction was completed in August 1774. Robert Smith designed it, in Georgian style, but did not supervise construction.
The First Continental Congress met there from September 5 to October 26, 1774. The Pennsylvania Provincial Conference met there in June 1776. During the Revolution it served as a hospital for British and American troops.
It also housed the Library Company, the American Philosophical Society and the First and Second Banks of the United States. It was a Federal Custom House from 1802 to 1819. It is a National Historic Landmark and admission is free.
