The story

The Weatherford Hotel was established in 1897 by John W. Weatherford, a native of Weatherford, Texas. After bad fires in 1897, the city passed a rule that buildings in the business area had to be brick, stone or iron. Weatherford built a three-story brick hotel addition, which had its grand opening on New Year's Day 1900.

For years it was the most prominent hotel in Flagstaff. Guests included artist Thomas Moran, publisher William Randolph Hearst and writer Zane Grey. A three-sided balcony and the original cupola were damaged by fire and removed in 1929.

In 1975, Henry Taylor bought the hotel to keep it from being demolished when downtown was in decline. The wrap-around porches were rebuilt, and the first stage was finished in February 1999.

Did you know? The hotel's balcony and cupola were removed in 1929.
Historians argue about this. Many people think old buildings stay exactly as built. Wikipedia says the Weatherford lost its balcony and cupola in 1929 and had its porches rebuilt starting in the 1990s.
