The Westminster Arcade was erected in 1828 at 130 Westminster Street and 65 Weybosset Street. It is notable as the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States, and it is a fine example of commercial Greek Revival architecture. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
Cyrus Butler developed it, and Russell Warren and Tallman & Bucklin designed it, with a lane of shops lit by skylights, like similar buildings in Europe. At first it was far from the shopping areas, so few customers came and it was known as Butler's Folly for many years. In June 1843 President John Tyler toured it and reportedly shook 5,000 hands.
It declined late in the twentieth century and was rehabilitated and reopened in 1980. It closed again in 2008 and reopened in October 2013 as shops plus small apartments called micro-lofts.
