The Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Monument stands on a triangular plaza at Congress and State Streets, in Portland's West End. The intersection is called Longfellow Square.
Sculptor Franklin Simmons began the design in 1885, three years after Longfellow's death, and the pedestal was designed by Francis H. Fassett. The monument was unveiled on September 29, 1888.
The bronze statue is about 7 feet (2.1 m) tall. It shows the poet late in life, seated in a chair with lion-head arms and a stack of books beneath it. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
