The story

Nashville's Union Station was built starting in 1898 and opened on October 9, 1900. Richard Montfort planned it, in the Romanesque style of Henry Hobson Richardson, who is also credited. Montfort was an engineer for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and spent several years planning the building.

The building is Romanesque Revival, a look that stood out among train stations of the time. It was built west of downtown and next to a viaduct. Streetcars used it too, until streetcars ended in Nashville in 1941. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1975.

The last passenger trains left in the late 1970s. After it was abandoned for several years, the station reopened in 1986 as the Union Station Hotel. In 2012 it became a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel.

Did you know? It reopened as a hotel in 1986.
Historians argue about this. Many people think a station this old must be a ruin or a museum. Wikipedia says it is a working hotel.

Fact or tall tale?
