The story

Ruth and Thomas Moore built the house in 1939 and named it for Grace Toof, a family relative. Elvis Presley bought it on March 19, 1957 for $102,500.

Elvis died at Graceland on August 16, 1977. His grave is in the Meditation Garden next to the mansion. The Jungle Room has an indoor waterfall and was a recording studio in 1976.

Graceland opened to the public on June 7, 1982. It was listed on the National Register on November 7, 1991 and became a National Historic Landmark on March 27, 2006. The house has 17,552 square feet.

Did you know? The wrought-iron gate was designed by Abe Sauer.
Historians argue about this. The house name comes from Grace Toof, daughter of the founder of a family business, not from the Moores themselves.

Fact or tall tale?
