The story

The Las Vegas Grammar School, also called the Historic Fifth Street School, was built in 1936. It replaced Clark County High School, which operated from 1917 to 1934 and was destroyed by fire. The school sits on a 20-acre site at 401 South Fourth Street.

People came to call it the Fifth Street School because Las Vegas Boulevard was still called Fifth Street. The school was used until 1966. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 20, 1988.

The building has been through a $9.5 million renovation. Today it is home to the city's Office of Cultural Affairs, the Nevada School of Arts and the UNLV School of Architecture's Downtown Design Center.

Did you know? The school replaced a high school that burned down.
Historians argue about this. Many people assume this was always called Fifth Street School. Wikipedia says that was an informal nickname for the Las Vegas Grammar School.
