The first church on this spot was built in 1834 from gray sandstone, and people started calling it the Old Stone Church. By 1853 it was too small, so it was torn down. The larger Romanesque Revival church was dedicated on August 12, 1855.
On March 7, 1857, a fire struck, and the 250-foot steeple crashed onto Ontario Street. Another fire gutted the interior on January 5, 1884. The congregation decided to rebuild on the same spot, and the church was dedicated again on October 19, 1884.
The only big change since is the steeple. A copy of the original was added in 1999, as part of a $2.4 million renovation that also cleaned the sandstone. It is the oldest building on Public Square.
