The story

The current Lincoln Park Conservatory was built between 1890 and 1895 by the Lincoln Park Commission. Joseph Lyman Silsbee designed it with Mifflin E. Bell. The style is Victorian and exotic, with trusses shaped as ogee arches.

The vestibule and Palm House opened in 1892. The Fern Room and the Tropical Room, now the Orchid Room, opened in 1895. The Display House shows seasonal flower shows.

The conservatory covers about 3 acres. It has four display halls, a vestibule and fifteen propagating and growing houses. A fiddle-leaf rubber tree in the Palm House was planted in 1891.

Did you know? A rubber tree in the Palm House was planted in 1891.
Historians argue about this. Wikipedia lists several different dates for the greenhouse and the present building, so use ranges.

Fact or tall tale?
