The story

White Point Garden is a 5.7-acre park at the tip of the Charleston peninsula. It is the southern end of the Battery, a defensive seawall and promenade. The tip used to be called Oyster Point, and landfill later shaped the sharp point.

From about 1840 to 1881 a public bathing house stood at the end of King Street, with a cake and ice cream parlor on the top floor. It was removed in 1881 as the garden and waterfront were filled in.

The garden has a largely military theme. Two guns from the USS Keokuk were installed in 1900. Keokuk was sunk by Charleston's forts in April 1863. Along East Battery is an 11-inch Dahlgren gun from the Keokuk that fired shells at Fort Sumter in 1863.

Did you know? It used to have a bathing house with an ice cream parlor.
Historians argue about this. Many people think the park has always been on solid land. Wikipedia says the tip of the peninsula was shaped by landfill.
