The Georgia State Capitol was completed in March 1889. Willoughby J. Edbrooke and Franklin Pierce Burnham of Chicago designed it. Miles and Horne of Toledo handled construction. The style is Renaissance Revival and Classical Revival, modeled to resemble the U.S. Capitol.
The dome was gilded in a 1958 renovation with native gold leaf from near Dahlonega in Lumpkin County. The original dome was terra cotta covered with tin. A statue named Miss Freedom has stood on top since the building opened.
A convention voted in 1877 to move the state capital permanently to Atlanta, and the city handed over its City Hall tract in 1880. The Georgia Capitol Museum has existed inside since 1889.
